Sex! I can’t think of anything else that’s associated here. I thought it was a show where sex or even the thought of it doesn’t seem to go anywhere. But I stand corrected. It’s even unexpected to see how it was handled. There are some cases it was a bit too over-the-top yet it’s giving out an important message. Never in my mind a coming-of-age show would be within my radar.
All five girls have different views on sex. Some look like they know it but in truth they’re not. From the get-go each of them deal with the subject in their most painful and relatable way. This shows a rare case in anime because either it’s done for cheap jokes or for other unnecessary purposes. The wordplays, translations, and even the delivery are all spot-on. Not a single ounce of time was wasted. It somehow feels like A Place Further than the Universe in a way, except the subject being discussed is entirely distinct.
The notable fact here is the subject being seen from the girls’ point of view. If you think about it, when a guy in anime talks about sex or anything ecchi related you might already guess what he’s talking. Even the guys in this show are also showing the recognizable traits we see so often in the medium.
As someone who’s familiar with these kinds of tropes, it’s enough to say that it has achieved a new level of thought towards sex and adolescence in general. If it stays consistent throughout it could be one of the unforeseen best shows. But who knows?
